Basics - Definition

A spring evokes inevitably, for most people, a cylindrical helical rolled up wire, that can be found in pens, the shock absorbers of cars or on the forks of the motor cycles. It is advisable to know that this kind of spring is only one of the multiple components of machines which can be gathered under this name. To specify this concept, here is the general standard definition of the spring:

A spring is a system whose function is to become deformed under the action of a force or of a torque then to restore the energy stored with the resumption of its initial form.

This website mainly deals with the most common springs : helical springs with circular wire and a constant pitch.
