Basics - types of helical springs

Many types of helical springs are available. Among those, we can distinguish the compression helical springs, the tension springs and the torsion springs.

Compression springs

The compression spring is the most used type of spring. As its name indicates, it is designed to be compressed. The effort must thus be mainly axial and directed towards the spring. To facilitate the application of the force, the ends of the springs are often brought closed and ground

Tension springs

The tension springs must be solicited so as to increase their length. They are used as return springs in many applications (electric doors, switches, brushes of windshield wiper...). There exists many systems of fixing. The most current method consists in deforming the last coils of the spring to form a loop or a hook.

Torsion springs

The torsion springs, also rolled up as helix, have as a crucial role to restore a torque. Their field of application is very large. This explains why the fixing systems are very diverse and are often designed for the specific applications.
